History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 18 History

The Air Jordan 18 was originally released to the public back in 2003, designed by Tate Kuerbis. During Michael Jordan’s last NBA game with the Washington Wizards against the Philadelphia 76ers on April 16, 2003, he was wearing the Air Jordan 18 Sport Royal.

The overall outlook of the 18 was inspired by the automobile world; MJ adores automobiles.  The rubber heel wrap on the sneaker is inspired from racing car driving shoes. The Carbon fiber-based monocoque is based off of F1 racing cars. It was also inspired by Italian dressing shoes. When the sneaker first released, it came with a special slide out shoe box, towel, brush, and an “Air Jordan 18 Driver’s Manual” pamphlet.

The Air Jordan 18 was equipped with the latest sneaker technology at the time. It contains air vents, carbon comfort plate, hidden quick lace system, suede leather uppers, and zoom air soles. There are a few cons about the 18s; they collect a lot of dust, scuffs, and dirt marks since they are suede shoes. They would also make someone who’s playing basketball fall, due to the rubber soles on the sneakers because they collect dust also. The Air Jordan 5 had the same issue. In order to prevent this problem from happening, you would had in play in an indoor gym.

The original retail price for the 18s was $175.00, the low versions were $150.00, and the 18.5 versions were $175.00.

Features Of The Shoe

This shoe consist of a suede upper covered in black, along with the removeable shroud. Touches of sport royal can be found on the midsoles and lining, while metallic sliver is applied to the eyelets. Finally, it features air vent flops on the ankle (a Lamborghini Murcielago inspiration), and black rubber outsoles.

  1. These are cool. The price is a bit steep though at $225.00 That’s 2 different sneakers dropping this month. (South Beach, Black Royal). The blue really looks good against the black suede.

    Best Regards,
