History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 11 History

The Air Jordan 11 was first introduced back in 1995-1996, during Michael Jordan’s return to the NBA. Tinker Hatfield came up with the idea to make the shoe look like a shiny body convertible, so the sneaker was created with shiny patent leather. It also has a lightweight Phylon midsole with a full length air sole unit and full length carbon fiber plate, making it extremely supportive. The only bad things about the shoes were poor traction, defects on the outsole, and fast creases on the midsoles.

In 1995, the retail price for the shoes were $125.00 (the low versions were $115.00).

  1. My other half is dying to get his hands on these. I think I have seen that video every day for the last week, he keeps playing it and saying just how great these look lol. Apparently it is the retro style that’s so amazing about these sneakers!

So anyway I am thinking about getting him a pair for Christmas. Can’t wait to see his face cause he really has no idea I’m even considering it.

I was just wondering on sizing. Do you know if they run true to size or where I might find a size guide so I don’t mess up royalty and get him ones that don’t fit? Also can they be pre-ordered from anywhere? I don’t want to miss out now that I’ve decided that’s what I’ll get him.

    Any help appreciated.

    • Hello Heidi, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, the Air Jordan 11s are cut small, and you will need to get a size up from his regular size. I also suggest that you visit Ebay, they have pre orders right now, plus you can purchase them now to avoid the wait.

  2. These shoes are awesome you know.

I was a kid when I saw them for the first time and always wanted to have shoes like that.

Unfortunately it is hard to find shoes like that, the bottom of those are so nice, and very good for you feet and knees.

I will check them out and maybe I will buy them, first I want to know if it has very good quality like the ancestors.

Anyway, thanks for sharing it with us!

    • Hello Emmanuel, thanks for the comment. It has good quality has long as you take good care of them. The only thing is that the bottom sole with turn yellow overtime due to air and moisture. But there are some cleaning materials that can help keep your sole from yellowing.

  3. That is a really nice shoe. Thank you for the history and the reminder of everything MJ achieved in his career.

Why do they keep bringing these back up? Is it just the fact that they are awesome or their popularity?

I would love to get some for my son. Where can I get these?

It is cool that they have his 45 number since they were made during his comeback.

Will these only be in the Black and White colors?

    • Hello Curtis, thanks for the comment. Due to the popularity and high demand, Nike and Jordan continue to re-release the same sneakers over and over again, and they sell very well. These will be available at select retailers and online on December 8th, for $220.00. Yes, this is the only colorway of the Air Jordan 11s releasing this week. There are also many other colorway available on Ebay, plus more Air Jordan 11 sneakers releasing in the near future so stay tuned!!

  4. Hey Ahmad, great article here on the Air Jordan 11 concord sneakers?I hope i named that correctly then? Please forgive me if I am wrong as I am from Australia and we call this type of shoe a high cut or basketball shoe.Anyway back to your article…..I really like you article for the:

    history of MJs’ impressive career

    the embedded videos

the specific descriptions of the shoe

    the great images contained herein!!

I was even imagining wearing a pair while i was reading the article,so good work here friend !!

    • Hello Billy, thanks for the comment. I am glad that you have enjoyed reading this article, and hopefully you will consider purchasing a pair of this classic kicks from the 90s.

  5. Looking forward to as didn’t had a chance or the money years ago!

This site is very helpful as well as showing which sites can be trusted and which not!

Really like the story of the air Jordan 11 concord!  Didn’t know some things.

Love the shoes as i play basketball and always looking for good additions!

Question do you know if is coming in any other colors?

    Thank you xx

    • Hello Liliana, thanks for the comment. The Air Jordan 11 has released in numerous colorways over the years. You can go on Ebay and find many of them up for auction. There is also a rumor that the classic Air Jordan 11 Bred will be releasing again during holiday 2019.

  6. Nike’s became extremely popular in the mid nineties for their Nike air brand as far as I can remember. Back then I remember spending over hundred dollars for Nike air.  The comfort of those sneakers blew me away. I wonder how will the new  Air Jordan 11 Concord would be in terms of comfort and reliability.  Nike is very good brand overall.

    • Hello Pardeap, thanks for the comment. I have a pair of the Air Jordan 11 Concord from 2011, and they are indeed comfortable and reliable from my own experience. Hopefully, you are planning to cop a pair.

  7. Thanks for the great article! I’ve been searching for a Christmas gift for my brother, and this is something he’d really dig. Do you know if they have any deals going on? I have seven more siblings to get gifts for and would like to save some $$ if at all possible.

    • Hello Maurissa, thanks for the comment. I suggest that you check on Ebay to find out what deals they got.

  8. Site looks great.  Very clean and easy to read.

Only negative thing, The section “Features of the shoe” is the smallest section.  It seems like if you want to sell this shoe there should be more here…maybe that is all there is to say, not knowing the shoe.  You talk about the poor traction in the older model, has that been fixed?  What is the sole now vs what it was?

Maybe a little more of MJ history, mostly a list of accomplishments.

I am not a sneaker guy, but I know lots of people who are…always want the newest, cleanest etc.  There is a market for this.

Overall nice looking site.  You have been active with it for a while now, great work.

    • Hello Tony, thanks for the comment. I would like to also mention that the Air Jordan 11 has rubber traction pods in the forefoot and heels to prevent from losing traction. The Air Jordan 11 can now hold up well while playing on the courts. I will definitely have to elaborate more on MJ’s history in future articles. Thanks for the feedback, it really helps.

  9. Hello Ahmad,

Growing up in the 90’s Air Jordans were the pinnacle of cool. if you were lucky enough to own a pair of these kicks, you were automatically the envy of the entire block. I have personally always loved the look and style of the Air Jordan and am really excited that they have been released again in 2018.

They look great when they are new but all that white does require a lot of care to keep it that way, can you suggest some tips or products to keep them looking in mint condition?

    • Hello Rich, thanks for the comment. I suggest that you use hot water and soap with a toothbrush or cloth to clean the sneaker. And after that, allow the sneakers to air dry.

  10. Oh wow!!  Another gift idea for my son! Thank you! I am sure he would LOVE to have a pair of these. He has not mentioned them to me yet but he does like good and cool-looking sports shoes. For me personally, I like the purple sole but I would also like other colors on the shoe itself. Do you know if they are looking into diversifying the colors or do they want to keep this as ‘classic’ as possible, just black and white? Nathalie

    • Hello Nathalie, thanks for the comment. These will stay classic as possible and remain black and white.

  11. Those are really great shoes.

I was literally reading your post to hubby, who is an Air Jordan enthusiast.

His questions are where to get them before they go out of stock and what colours do they come in?

Thanks for the post. Your article is factual and revealing, especially the history of how the Air Jordan came to be.

    • Hello Eohia, thanks for the comment. You can find them on Ebay and Stockx. You are definitely guaranteed a pair.
