For those of you sneaker heads that are a huge fan of the Air Jordan 11, I have great news to share!! The Air Jordan 11 Blackout (also called prom night and cap and gown) will be dropping by the end of the month. Back in 2011, this Air Jordan 11 was apart of the Air Jordan Blackout Sample Collection, and this month, it is being release to the public. This all black colorway is nicknamed “prom night” and “cap and gown” because the Air Jordan 11 would normally be worn as attire at a formal outing such as to the prom and graduation. With the school year about to come to an end, this would be something nice to rock for your high school prom and graduation, don’t you agree???

History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him. Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”. MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 11 History

The Air Jordan 11 was first introduced back in 1995-1996, during Michael Jordan’s return to the NBA. Tinker Hatfield came up with the idea to make the shoe look like a shiny body convertible, so the sneaker was created with shiny patent leather. It also has a lightweight Phylon midsole with a full length air sole unit and full length carbon fiber plate, making it extremely supportive. The only bad things about the shoes were poor traction, defects on the outsole, and fast creases on the midsoles. In 1995, the retail price for the shoes were $125.00 (the low versions were $115.00).

Features Of The Shoe

This sneaker is basically covered in all black with features including a suede upper, patent leather mudguard, metal jumpman logos, and graduation cord inspired shoe laces. Additionally, this shoe features the traditional icy translucent outsole as well. Finally, the sneakers will come in the special Air Jordan 11 slide box, along with the transparent XI sleeve.

Release Date

On May 26th, these sneakers will release. They will be retailed for $250.00. These will instantly sell out, so don’t sleep on these!!!

  1. These look comfy. They are a neutral color, so I think I would probably buy a pair of these. Black goes with almost everything. I don’t like my footwear to stand out too much!

  3. Do these shoes wear well with a pair of straight legged jeans and a collar shirt? I’d figure I would love to put these shoes on if I were going out for a night at the bar. On top of that, I am also trying to diversify my shoe collection as well.

  5. The Air Jordan 11 Blackout look amazing.

Is anyone taking pre-orders or is it first come first serve?

It will be interesting to see how fast they sell out….and how quickly then end up on eBay for 2x+ the retail price!
I also wonder how quickly fakes are going to start showing up.

Great review of another winner from Nike. (I also appreciate the history you provided…I grew up watching MJ, so his line of Nike shoes have always held a special place in my heart).

    Best! KMV
