History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 1 History

The Air Jordan 1 was first introduced way back in 1984-1985, created by Peter Moore. Michael Jordan has become the Rookie Of The Year, and played in the All-Star game. It was the first basketball shoe wore in the NBA that featured multiple colors. MJ first disliked the sneaker, but started to grew on him overtime.

During that time, the famous sneaker was banned by Commissioner of the NBA, David Stern, since the sneakers didn’t follow the standard uniform policy and the sneaker had to be 50% white. MJ wasn’t allowed to wear the shoes on the court, but MJ refused to play without them anyways. He was fined $2,000 for every time he worn the sneakers on the court. However, Nike has covered the fines, and also gave the Air Jordan 1 the “The Shoe Banned By The NBA” label.

There were over 23 different color variations released, and the Air Jordan 1 also came with two sets of shoe laces that matched the colorway on the sneakers. The shoe was originally retailed at $65.00.

Features Of The Shoe

This sneaker comes with a black, red, and muslin color scheme. The leather upper consists of black, while a red bold racing stripe is placed across the upper as well (this stripe is inspired by the “Banned” colorway of the Air Jordan 1). Finally, red is applied to the Nike Air Branding on the tongue, while muslin is found on the rubber sole of the shoe.

  1. Thank you for this great and amazing post, I find it really helpful and nice and your review of this shoe is well detailed ,I think Micheal Jordan had a very illustrious career and I never knew he attained as much feast as you mentioned here. I will read more about the Air Jordan 1 price. I kind of like the shoe.

    • Hello Clement, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker news!

  2. First of all, these shoes looks great. I love the detail in them and the colors. I have always loved Nike and they are my favorite shoe brand. I love the Nike logo on the side of these Jordans, it is visible but it is not standing out. The only thing I am not liking is the fact that they are leather. Do you know if they make any other ones that are vegan friendly?

    • Hello Alexandra, thanks for the comment. There are many other variations of the Air Jordan 1s. You can go on Ebay, and search Air Jordan 1 and see what you can find.

  3. Very interesting post. Thank you for putting down a brief history of Michael Jordan and Nike’s Air Jordan 1. I didn’t know the first Air Jordan was banned. They do look like sneakers though. It’s amazing how shoes today look quite different than back then but amazing still how wonderful they are today

    • Hello Shellykh, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check back with my site for more sneaker content!

  4. Man these Air Jordans look excellent! I love the black and red contrast. I never knew that Michael Jordan didn’t like the colors initially! I guess you learn something new everyday!

One thing that always looked so cool about these luxurious sneakers is the high rise near the ankle. It gives you an almost “elevated” look that is just so space age cool!

My friends swear by Air Jordans and I’ve heard nothing but exceptional things about them. How do these compare to the “Retro High” models and the like?

Thanks so much for the review, very helpful, and the history was really engrossing!

    • Hello Jacob, thanks for the comment. May you please rephrase that question please?

  5. The G.O.A.T. of basketball Micheal Jordan was and still is an idol, and his shoe line with Nike has been, in true Jordan fashion, iconic. I remember having an all white color way of the Jordan 1’s with the clear bottom in 2000 something. A clean classic shoe that never goes out of style, and this tasteful rework by Nike shows their commitment to Jordan brand and MJ.

    • Hello Danny, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker news!!

Good to be here again, nice preview about the Air Jordan 1 High Defiant inspired by the Italian sport car. Great shoe but am a bit turnoff by the color and glossy design. 11. I read on your post that Micheal Jordan when he finally accepted the offer from Nike, went for a meeting with them where he was shown sneakers in black and red and he said “I can’t wear those shoes, they are the devil’s color”. So which is it??  Was he banned from wearing those colors or did he reject the colors based on his religious belief??

    • Hello Vapz, thanks for the comment. The Air Jordan 1 “Banned” also known as “Bred” was banned from the NBA for breaking uniform regulations back in 1985.

  12. Hi,

A good story about a Nike brand sneaker. After I saw the very impressive signing process of Nike and Michael Jordan, I was very happy that Nike has been get the endorsement deal. I also like the inspiration for sports shoes from the color of the sports car and the style of Michael Jordan, it is also unique in design, it is a pair of sports shoes that I really like. I will keep the information on this sneaker and hope to purchase this Air Jordan 1 High Defiant someday.

Thank you very much for sharing this article.

    • Hello Tee, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker blogs!!

  13. Wow, that’s a cool story! I’d never heard that, about Jordan’s wearing shoes even tho’ they were “illegal” to the court.

And the fact that Nike covered the costs of his fines??! Classic!!

But then, I think he earned them enough money to where it didn’t hurt ’em much.  Lol

They look really great, and since they’re real leather they’ll last well.

But are they comfortable?? Or is this more for a “style” showing than everyday wear??

    • Hello TJ, thanks for the comment. The Air Jordan 1s fit true to size, and are comfortable indeed.

  14. Ahmad,

Air Jordan’s have always been one of the best brands that Nike put out.  The Luxury Italian Sports Car Inspiration of this high top is no exception I see.  Finding high tops is not an easy task for most men that have played basketball in the past and ended up with ankle injuries.  My husband is one of those, his ankles require high top shoes for stability at his height.

The color combination is handsomely put together and I know that I will be getting my husband a pair of these once they hit the stores.  Thank you for providing the specifics on them.  Do you know if they are going to be coming in a size 15?

    • Hello Susan, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, the biggest size in these are a 14, sorry 🙁 .

  15. Why do these shoes have to come out when I’m broke? lol.  love my Nike Vapormax but damn, those Air Jordans look beautiful! Their design but similar to the Air force sneakers but better. Are they available in other colors? I’m not really digging the black and red. Plain black or plain white would be nice

    • Hello Ezra, thanks for the comment. The Air Jordan 1 comes in many colors, go on Ebay and type in Air Jordan 1 to see some results.

  16. These shoes are awesome!!! Red and black are the devils colours lol MJ was and still is crazy. When I was growing up owning a pair of Jordan’s was like owning a Ferrari and if you had a pair your popularity increased immediately. Thankfully now I can afford a pair or three and may just pop over to get a pair early. Thanks for letting me know these bad boys are coming into the market!!

    • Hello Jordan, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker news!

Yes, these are very nice shoes. So, how much do you think those first edition 1984’s are worth?? My partner has a pair.. I would like to get him a new pair to match. They look pretty close to the ones in the closet. He would have a cow…Thank you for the info. I will be back. I still have a week to decide before it is to late.

    • Hello Kari, thanks for the comment. After doing some research, the original Air Jordan 1 released back in 1985 is worth $10,000 (not kidding). I hope that you are loaded, because that is steep!!!
