History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents, and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background.

Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”. MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 1 History

The Air Jordan 1 was first introduced way back in 1984-1985, created by Peter Moore. Michael Jordan has become the Rookie Of The Year, and played in the All-Star game. It was the first basketball shoe wore in the NBA that featured multiple colors. MJ first disliked the sneaker, but started to grew on him overtime.

During that time, the famous sneaker was banned by Commissioner of the NBA, David Stern, since the sneakers didn’t follow the standard uniform policy and the sneaker had to be 50% white. MJ wasn’t allowed to wear the shoes on the court, but MJ refused to play without them anyways. He was fined $2,000 for every time he worn the sneakers on the court. However, Nike has covered the fines, and also gave the Air Jordan 1 “The Shoe Banned By The NBA” label.

There were over 23 different color variations released, and the Air Jordan 1 also came with two sets of shoe laces that matched the colorway on the sneakers. The shoe was originally retailed at $65.00.

  1. Hi Ahmad,

Loving the color of these sneakers. I work with a shoe retailer in the UK and Nike Jordans are very popular. Unsure if we will be releasing these this week but I’m sure if we do they will be flying off the shelves.

I love the summer blues and greens and with the Nike Jordan brand, you know you are going to be getting a quality sneaker. I will be looking out for these this week and having a good close inspection before thinking about a purchase.

I’m sure they are going to be yet another popular seller for Nike.

Fantastic site btw, glad I stumble across it.

  3. These sneakers are just simply awesome. I usually am a guy that doesn’t get excited often. But these did get me a bit… emotional, LOL.

I must start by saying I’m a huge Jordan fan. I also love blue, it’s my favorite color. And I’m also from Estonia and have a YouTube channel where I talk about our country. So please go and check out our flag and you’ll understand why I got excited.

  4. Love the sneakers. I didn’t know that story of MJ wearing the banned sneakers and Nike paying fines each time. Obviously the publicity was more than worth it and the rest is marketing history. My wife is a big MJ fan and she wears a lot of tie-dye being a bit of a hippie I guess you could say so I may come under pressure to part with the $170. Thanks and cool stuff.

  7. This latest color release is very attractive for the Air Jordon shoes.  I am not a collector of Air Jordon shoes, but I can see that these might warrant a 2nd consideration.  I do wear a walking style shoe from another brand.  After reading about the way the toe box is shaped, and the quality of the styling and manufacturing of these shoes, These could update my casual footwear a bit!

Thank you also for the information about Micheal Jordon and his amazing years and career.  The remarkable fetes of MJ and his team combined for an impressive line up of accomplishments.  Times have surely changed since Micheal was paying $2000 fines for wearing the shoe because it didn’t meet the 50% white of the requirements for the national uniforms requirement.   I like the slightly vintage look of the shoe and the leather used for a great deal of the body of the shoe.  The high top of Air Jordon I, and the dark blue all combine to a classy shoe. Thanks for a new consideration.
