History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company look for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents, and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 11 History

The Air Jordan 11 was first introduced back in 1995-1996, during Michael Jordan’s return to the NBA. Tinker Hatfield came up with the idea to make the shoe look like a shiny body convertible, so the sneaker was created with shiny patent leather. It also has a lightweight Phylon mid sole with a full length air sole unit and full length carbon fiber plate, making it extremely supportive. The only bad things about the shoes were poor traction, defects on the out sole, and fast creases on the mid soles.

In 1995, the retail price for the shoes were $125.00 (the low versions were $115.00).

Features Of The Shoe

This new iteration features both the Bred and Concord colorways incorporated into one. It features black patent leather on the mudguard and white leather upper. Additionally, it comes with a white mid sole and red rubber out sole as well.

Finally, a red number “23” and black Jumpman can be seen on the heel of the sneaker.

  1. Thanks for the detailed review! I’ve been looking at these shoes for a while and love the streamline design. There’s not too much going on but it’s not boring either. I absolutely LOVE the 23 detailing on the heel – it’s one of the reasons I’m interested in it. Also, thanks for pointing out that it runs small. You’re a lifesaver!

  2. Lately I’ve been pretty boring in my bball shoe selections. Whites, grays, and blacks. This shoe would be a great transition back to some pops of color. The vibrant red sole is stand out! I love it.

    I’m about a 9.5 / 10 (US). Should I go for the 10s or jump up to the 10.5?

Thanks! I’m really loving this site!

    • Hello Charles, thanks for the comment. The Air Jordan 11s run true to size, so you will be just fine purchasing a size 10.

  3. Hey there, I know these Air Jordan 11 Low Gym Red were programmed to be released today June 27th. I’m glad I remembered the exact date and came online to purchase. 4. Air Jordan 11 has a special place in my heart and I believe most Jordan fans :). I used to have one of Jordan’s 11 sneakers and ever since this series became my favorite one. The prices might be an issue for some people but in my opinion, you don’t buy sneakers everyday.

For anyone out there reading my post – you won’t make a mistake if you buy a pair of these.

  5. I don’t have any 11s lows, I used to. These are pretty clean, but I have the 2019 Breds and 2018 Concords still DS and the 2012 Breds that still look DS, so I passed on these. Plus it’s some upcoming heat in July I want and sometimes you have to pick and choose what shoe you really want. But they are pretty dope.

  6. Hi, I enjoyed reading your review on The Air Jordan 11 Low Gym Red. There’s a lot of helpful and informative information about the new Michael Jordan shoe.  The video was excellent, too, which had a good description of the shoe.

I like these shoes not only because they’re stylish but because they are comfortable, good ankle support, and easy to clean.

I would like to purchase these for my son, who will be playing high school basketball this coming year.  If he is a size 9, do I need to get a size nine or bigger size?

    Thank You,
