History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 6 History

The Air Jordan 6 was originally released way back in 1991. Michael Jordan has wore these during his first NBA title and won his first NBA Finals MVP.

The Air Jordan 6 was the first Jordan to feature a reinforcement around the toe of the sneaker. Tinker Hatfield has designed two holes on the top of the tongue, and “spoilers” on the back of the shoes. Hatfield has done this because MJ has been having issues with putting on the past five Jordan models (Air Jordan 1-5).

Like the Air Jordan 5, the Air Jordan 6 features clear rubber soles, making it the second Jordan to have this feature. The clear rubber soles on the 6 was built to be more solid, since there were complaints that kids that owned the Jordan 5 were falling because the soles would collect dust on the court, which made the sole slippery. The heel tab on the 6 was positioned to prevent it from hitting MJ’s Achilles Tendon. MJ’s number “23” was also incorporated on the sneaker as well.

When the 6 first came out in 1991, it was $125.00.

Features Of The Shoe

The sneaker is dressed in a medium olive, university red, sail, and black color scheme. The upper of the sneaker is constructed with olive nubuck, while touches of black and university red can be seen throughout the silhouette. Additionally, the shoe features the classic Nike Air Branding and Cactus Jack Branding, along with sail midsoles and translucent outsoles as well, Finally, you will notice that there are side pockets located by the collars of the shoes.

  1. Congratulations on a great site. I believe I did an early review many aeons ago
and the site is now truly professional.

I liked the story and the links. You have paid advertise an exit pop that is not intrusive and a well set out page.
We don’t all want Air Jordans but you make it tempting.

    Best wishes

    Peter H

  2. Oh thank you so much for bringing this good news. I’ve been wanting sneakers with this kind of color. The olive green is perfect to be matched with my bomber jacket, so this one is a must have for me. I can’t wait for it to be released this Friday. It is a bit out of my budget, but I think I will check my savings for this one. Thanks again and keep releasing latest sneaker news.

    • Hello Alblue, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker news!!

  3. Hi Ahmed,

I really enjoyed reading your post on the Nike air Jordan’s. I must admit I had not heard of Travis Scott. I guess he’s not that popular with middle aged men from England! My question to you is, can I buy these shoes in the UK or was this just a US release date? My kids would really love a pair and I was thinking maybe for Christmas. Thanks in advance, Andrew

    • Hello Andrew, thanks for the comment. Ebay has international shipping options, so you would be fine.

  4. This is an excellent review of Air Jordans!
While I may not be able to afford a pair of these, they are intriguing.
Since I have neuropathy, comfortable footwear is essential for me.
And of course these shoes are very well built and might be an option for me down the road.
I need to discuss this with my doctor to see if he believes these will help me.
I am going to forward this review to others I know who would be interested!
Any idea how long these last?

    • Hello Rob, thanks for the comment. You can make these sneaker last for a lifetime as long as you take care of them. I keep my sneakers clean and in containers to ensure that they stay alive.

  5. This is a really nice looking shoe. You don’t often see ones that come in this olive green color, but it is done really well and not in an over-the-top kind of way. I do have a couple of questions, as I have not owned a pair of Air Jordan’s. Can you speak at all to their durability? I also have to ask, what would you put in the stash pocket? Maybe I’m showing my ignorance here, but I’m curious! Thanks for the post. Great looking shoes!

    • Hello Steve, thanks for the comment. The Air Jordan 6 is indeed durable. They are also comfortable, and have great ankle support. Well, to be honest, you have stash anything in the side pocket unless they can’t fit obviously lls.

  6. Thank you for this great article. That’s pretty cool that they collaborated the Air Jordan sneaker with the rapper Travis Scott. I have to say I have not listened to very much rap music in the last few years so I was not aware of Travis Scott. But he sounds like a very accomplished rap artist, and so his sneakers will definitely be very stylish. These would be great for me or also a gift for some of my friends who are major sneaker collectors. Thank you for your expertise on sneakers, and have a great day.

    • Hello C, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site as I post daily blogs!

  7. My roommate and I are huge sneaker fans as we love to go out and buy the newest pairs even if we are broke afterward. I love the idea of these posts and the description of each shoe. it will probably allow me to pick a shoe before spending hours in the store trying to decide.

    • Hello Ian, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker content.

  8. Hello fellow sneaker friend Ahmad,

First I have to say that I haven’t bought the two previous Jordan sneakers. But maybe I’ll buy the newest one after reading this article. Almost everyone who loves rap music and basketball is a fan of Travis Scott and Michael Jordan. The history between Air Jordan brand and MJ is an interesting story. I am glad that MJ had agreed to sign the 5 year deal with Nike back in 1984. I like the color scheme of medium olive, university red and black. The side pockets located at the collars of the shoes are also a great feature to come by. One more day before releasing the new shoe right? Maybe I’ll buy Men: $250.00 shoe for my brother.  Thanks for this informative article Ahmad 🙂

    • Hello Anjali, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker content!!

  9. Air Jordan 6 to me has turned immortal. I’m just saving money from my meager salary for this and soon I’ll have it for my daily jogging. It’s one of the most successful brands of Nike and it feels good wearing the outfit in my everyday jog, to impress my friends and of course, the chics.

By the way, I noticed something hanging on the side of this Air Jordan 6 Travis Scott shoes. It looks like a small pocket and what’s that for? Can a mobile phone fit in there?

    • Hello Gomer, thanks for the comment. Well, you can try to fit a phone in there if it can fit lls.

  10. These new Air Jordans look awesome. I love the colour and overall design of these.

I have been wearing Air Jordans since the 90’s and you can’t go wrong with these exceptional sneakers from Nike. Yep, I know that makes me too old to wear Nike Air sneakers but I just love them. I still have a pair of Air Jordans 2 that I purchased when they were re-released in 2004! They have never been worn which seems sad but they are now worth more than double the price I paid for them!!

I will definitely be purchasing these bad boys!

    • Hello Tony, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker blogs!

I love wearing Sneakers and it’s what I have most in my shoe racks. Air Jordan 6 is a really good looking and I sure it’s going to be of good quality. I’ll save up to get a pair of it even though it’s a bit much. Thanks for sharing this news about Air Jordan 6, I’ve enjoyed reading your article and it’s very useful. Thanks.

  12. Hello Ahmad,
I love the shoe that showed Air Jordan 6 Travis Scott looks very strong. An olive color with a red and black that makes a great contrast.

I have a nike shoe that I use to run for 10 years, they have no competition.

I also have a very athletic brother who would like to give it to him, I will talk to the first one before making the purchase. Thank you!

  13. Hey Ahmad, awesome article. I like those gym shoes, I’ve been looking for a new pair for some time so thanks for this info, where can I find some; do you know? What niche would this fall under? I’m surprised there any MJ memorabilia i.e. gym shoes let alone Jordans, it’s good to know this. Awesome job!
