History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 5 History

The Air Jordan 5 was originally released back in February 1990, created by yours truly, Tinker Hatfield. It was the first Jordan to ever have clear rubber soles. On the midsole near the icy soles, you will also notice the flames on each side of the shoes. In Tinker’s eyes, Michael Jordan’s performance was like a “Fighter Plane”, so the sneaker was designed to look like a Fighter Plane. The Jordan 5 is an inspiration of the “grey nurse shark” or the World War 2 British Fighter Plane; the Spitfire MkV3. 3m reflection was also added on the shoe tongues. The sneakers were originally retailed for $125.00.

Features Of The Shoe

This colorway consists of white, black, and island green. The material is constructed with leather, along with leopard print. Island Green can found on the tongue, eyestay, translucent outsole, side panels, and branding.

Additionally, black hits the shoelaces, lining, and midsole, while metallic silver speckles can be found on the midsole as well.

  1. Whoa! I had no idea Air Jordan sneakers were that collectable lol. I admit I have never actually owned a pair of Jordan’s myself. I often just wear New Balance sneakers and running shoes. I love the pale green of those Air Jordan 5 Island sneakers, it reminds me of the ocean in a way. Why is there such a margin in the price range? I’m curious what causes that and what I should look out for if I try to get one of these. Thanks.

    • Hello Riverdogg, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site as I post sneaker blogs daily!

  2. Hey, nice article about Air Jordan 5. My son has been a fan of Air Jordan’s forever. He was always a basketball guy. They have always been pricey but they are sure in demand. And stylish as well as functional. I appreciate the history of MJ, too. I was kind of shopping for my son cause he’s such a ‘shoe guy’. Thanks for the great review. I think he would like this color a lot.

  3. hi Ahmad. Thanks for sharing this review concerning Air Jordan 5 Island Green – A New Touch For The 5s. This one looks beautiful too but the previous one I read about sometime ago on this blog, Air Jordan 13 Island Green – New Colorway For The Iconic Sneaker looks much more appealing to me and even cheaper too.

  4. I love the Island Green Air Jordan sneaker especially since it glows in the dark and contrasts nicely. Admittedly I am biased, since I have been into Air Jordans since the early 90’s and seeing these shoes rekindled my flame. As I have always respected Michael Jordan, his legacy, brand and contributions to society.

  5. Wow am a big fan of shoes and when it comes to Air Jordan i love then because Micheal Jordan is mt favorite all time basketball player i have had a great experience with air Jordan from Air Jordan 1 down to 3 i used all because to me they are one of the best out there although i have not tried the air Jordan 5 in know i would be a blast.

  6. This Air Jordan 5 Island Green is looking very dope and classic too. I love the colour combination and the style. The pros of this shoe are really nice: durability, comfortability, easy to clean, light weight, stylish etc.

One thing I don’t like about these kind of sneakers is that they are easily messed up with dirts. The price tag placed on it I high too.

  7. Probably one of the best shoes I have ever owned. Good old days back in high school 2 years ago I and my best friend had these and mines were black and white whilst his were read and white. The looks are great and we really did get those stares from people, you just have to know how to wear them right. What I liked most about them was that they are not so hard to clean and they are not heavy as they may look.

  8. I am actually very grateful to have found your website. It takes away a lot of the work I have to do. Nowadays there are so many knockoffs that it is absolutely brilliant that you have compiled this list of top Air Jordan kicks! I honestly have never seen some of these! I also like the addition of the sites where we can get authentic sneakers! Thank you very much!

  9. Hello Ahmad,
Beautiful shoe the Air Jordan 5 Island Green, I love the color scheme. White, black and green island.

I really like leopard print seems ideal for my wife. She is looking for a good shoe to go jogging every morning.

Recently appearing ideal to add in our closet.

I will wait for my wife to return before making the purchase.

    Thank you!

  10. I really love sneakers. Nike is just one of the popular sneaker shoes in the Philippines. Now there’s a new, the Air Jordan 5 island Green.

I know these are durable and it lasts for several years until you will lose interest in it. However, I will just have it in my dream and I’m happy if you, Ahmad, would send even just the used ones, LOL. I’m joking, nevertheless, there’s nothing wrong if it’s a dream come true.

This kind of shoes is worth the money but they are made for the rich only. This is my opinion and I’m dreaming of a company that thinks of making quality shoes for the common populace of the world.
