History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 5 History

The Air Jordan 5 was originally released back in February 1990, created by yours truly, Tinker Hatfield. It was the first Jordan to ever have clear rubber soles. On the midsole near the icy soles, you will also notice the flames on each side of the shoes.

In Tinker’s eyes, Michael Jordan’s performance was like a “Fighter Plane”, so the sneaker was designed to look like a Fighter Plane. The Jordan 5 is an inspiration of the “grey nurse shark” or the World War 2 British Fighter Plane; the Spitfire MkV3. 3m reflection was also added on the shoe tongues. The sneakers were originally retailed for $125.00.

Features Of The Air Jordan 5 (According To Footlocker.com)

This is definitely something to rock in honor of the upcoming religious holiday. Too bad the bigger foot sneaker heads can’t squeeze them in these 🙁 . What are your thoughts on these??

  2. Hey Ahmad! I’ve been looking for a gift for my nephew with his shoe size at 5 and Air Jordan 5 GS Easter seems to be all I was looking for. Great color, perfect size and an amazing brand that doesn’t disappoint. Awesome content and great recommendation!

I am sure he will love them and that is the kind of gift any Jordan-fan kid would want to visit for Easter, isn’t it?

    How comfortable are they?

    • Hello Heku, thanks for the comment. I happen to own a few pair of Air Jordan 5, and they are indeed a comfortable fit. They are also durable as long as you take care of them.

  3. These Michael Jordan shoes look like they were designed specifically for Easter. The colors reflect spring for sure! I don’t know that I would want to wear them for everyday activities. I’m more of a one-color sneaker kind of gal. I would get sick of the multiple colors and definitely want something solid in a couple of months. I feel like the paint splatters would just start to look dirty after a while. If I were a kid, I would love them though! I may be just a bit too practical for these shoes.

  4. Even if you’re not a basketball fanatics, you know who Michael Jordan is or at least you’ve heard his name. I must admit tho that I have never wore Jordans, I have only ever seen them on other people. I had no idea that the Air Jordan 5 was originally released in 1990, so I am impressed that they have been able to come up with the Air Jordan 5 GS Easter which is different from the rest and actually quite nice! Looking forward to reading more of your reviews!

  5. Hey Ahmad, Thanks for the post! I’m in looking for healthy Easter gift for my nieces. They’re little too old for stuffed animals and Candy just isn’t that good for for them. I thought maybe getting something for their basketball obsession, and these shoes will probably be  perfect!

Thanks for including the history of Michael Jordan, I lived in Portland Oregon in the early 90s and your post brought back a lot of good memories… Except when the Chicago Bulls trounced the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1992 NBA finals. Back then Clyde Drexler just was not a match for young Michael Jordan!

Thanks for the post and the walk down memory lane!

  6. Hello Ahmad, this is clearly Nike doing what they do best. So far its been really amazing seeing these shoes and from research, they are really comfortable for the users and don’t cause pain due to the way they have made the inside. I specifically like the rubber sole which they use for this shoe and the color is nice. Does it have more varieties of color?

    • Hello Benson, thanks for the comment. Yes, over the course of 30 years, the Air Jordan 5 has released in numerous colorways. You can check out Ebay, StockX, footlocker, etc.

  7. With remaining safe right now, avoiding gyms and other types of group exercise, this is a timely reminder that walking and running alone of with a shared house member, is still something we can do. And the “Air J**** 5 GS” could be just the sort of sneaker ideal for you to help your teenager run by your side or for brothers/sisters together. The MJ curriculum vitae is a sure way to persuade my “picky” teenagers that this is a “cool” shoe to join me on that run – and the great things is, we can order them online.  Relatively risk free.

You clearly know your stuff! You describe the shoe, so much better than a salesperson in a regular Mall store.  Really helpful.  I had no idea Nike at one time were struggling! They have certainly bounced back!

  8. I like the colour of these. Do you think I can get these at colours which are more darker like dominamtely dark. I want to get a pair for my little brother who is a sneaker lover and definitely adores Jordan’s. About the price they are just as expected a little pricey but I’m sure they are worth the money. I used to own a pair of Jordan’s about 3 or 4 years ago and they did live quite a long life. Will be sure check these out Ahmad.

  9. Greetings Ahmad!  Wow!  look at those Kicks!  It is going to be a rush to purchase these Easter Gifts.  Looks like they are available starting today?  These are really going to sell quickly because we are not able to celebrate Easter in any traditional way…so these will be a great way to feel good about having to stay at home.  and for only 140 bucks…pretty reasonable.  Thank you for sharing.

  10. I love the sleekness and the funkiness attached to the design and colour of this particular air Jordan. It is unique, and really beautiful. This air Jordan 5 would definitely be a good fit for the money. Thanks for giving a snippet look into the achievements and life of the great Michael Jordan and thanks so much for this

  11. Hi Ahmad. I’m looking for a pair of sneakers for my little daughter. And these Air Jordan 5 GS Easter have impressed me so much. They’re cute and the colors are perfect (as you have said for this Easter, despite COVID-19).

I’ll surprise my baby with these cool sneakers, I already imagine her running around the house with them on.

  12. Hi, what a great post you have done. This is highly rich content post on the Michael Jordan and the History of the Air Jordan Brand. The post has provided in details all the awards that made MJ a living Legend in sports in general and Basketball in particular. I find your illustration of how the contract between Michael Jordan and Nike was consummated for Air Jordan brand. The Nike revival story with Air Jordan is motivating and a source of encouragement to everyone especially those of us who are venturing into online entrepreneurship. Great Job. Cheers
