History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

Air Jordan 4 History

The Air Jordan 4 was introduced back in 1989, created by the infamous Tinker Hatfield. This shoe was the first Jordan to feature over-molded mesh; the mesh was dipped in soft plastic and air was blown through it to clear out the plastic. Back in 1989, everyone felt that the sneaker was unattractive and no one liked them. But overtime, it grew on a lot of people. During their first release, the sneaker was retailed at $110.00.

Features Of The Air Jordan 4 (According To Footlocker.com)

  • Mesh and leather upper helps your feet breathe when things get heated.
  • Heel pull-tabs lets you quickly slip the shoes on and off.
  • Air sole midsole provides essential cushioning so you can stride up and down the court.
  • Rubber outsole with herringbone pattern offers crucial traction as you cut back and forth.

These sneakers are inspired by the original Air Jordan 1 Metallic Pack and will feature the red, purple, green, and orange colorways. The majority of each sneaker consist of a clean white leather upper. Finally, each sneaker has colored metallic details on the eyelets, tongue, and heel areas.

  1. I enjoyed reading this review of this pair of shoes. The Air Jordan 4 Metallic Pack looks like an excellent pair I would try out, and my friends would love wearing them as well.

Out of the colors, I probably would go with the red pair of shoes. It’s one of my favorite colors, so I definitely could see myself wearing these sneakers.

It’s too bad some of Nike’s new releases have been pushed back until later in the year. They can still offer them online- with online shopping/eCommerce sales doing well right now.

Thanks for sharing this review. I always enjoy reading your reviews of the newest sneakers that come out.

  2. Wow it amazes me how shoe’s have evolved over the years. I remember when the first Jordan’s hit the market. They were HUGE! Even with Jordan retired Nike has branded itself to be the market place for shoes, and Jordan continues to draw crowds.

When I was a kid the big deal was Julius “Dr. Jay” Erving started the trend of branding sneakers. I remember when I got my first pair of Dr. J’s. Man I was da bomb back then. That was when Converse was in their prime. Everyone wanted a pair. sleak design, vibrant colors, and the rave of all youngsters. I wore a hole right in the bottom of the sole, I wore those shoes for so long.

Then Adidas hit the scene with their RUN DMC sneakers. Adidas can thank RUN DMC for really putting them on the map with their song “My Adidas.” Every kid knew how to spell Adidas thanks to that rap. I got a pair of those, with the fat vibrant neon shoe strings that were in just right so you didn’t have to tie them. Another great sneaker I wore for a long time.

Since those days many players now endorse their type of sneaker. Basketball, Football, and even Soccer. The market is huge for sneakers, cleats, and cross trainers. Wish I could wear them, but with my plantar fasciitis I can’t wear any of those brands anymore as they don’t have enough support in them for my long hours on my feet in the healthcare field.

Thanks for your post. This brought back a lot of great memories from my childhood.

  3. I never knew the history of MJ’s relationship with Nike and the history of the Air Jordans themselves! That was actually super interesting, thank you for sharing that. I definitely was one of those people who didn’t like the designs originally, but they sure are growing on me. I’m surprised, but I like the orange the best, I think I could really pull those off. I’m excited to cop them!

  5. Hey Ahmad – that’s probably the most thorough history of Michael Jordan I’ve ever read! So cool!

I’ve never been much of a sneakerhead but my best friend is! And his birthday is coming up in 2 months – thought this could be a great gift for him. Since I’ve never really bought any sneakers before, and know anything about grabbing one when they launch, do you know how I can get my hands on a pair?

Will it sell out very quickly? Thanks in advance for helping a friend out here!

  7. Hey nice article you have there. Thanks for the history of Micheal Jordan and that of the Origin of Jordan brand. When it comes to me buying footwear’s, I go for quality and Jordan has been my preferred brand amongst others for ages. The Jordan 4 Metallic really looks nice both in the built and designs, having one will be a great deal for me to put on to club as soon as the lockdown is over

  8. Hello Ahmad, great content about MJ meticulous bravo , classics your article definitely brought back memories when I used to own a pairs and pairs of J’s I recently threw out a lot of boxes of the pairs of J’s I had lying around. As a fellow sneaker head you are right about these pair of J’s are definite cop they do sell fast!

  9. Michael Jordan is certainly a force to be reckoned with in the sports arena, but how did he come to make so many different sneaker types and looks, as he started off with one? Is it that Nike did all the design work on behalf of him?

Love the shoes though, even if they do get dirty quickly and are a bit tricky to clean. I am too scared to put them in the washing machine like I do with my Sketchers, as I am not sure how they will hold out.

    • Hello 👋, thanks for the comment. There were people that would design the classic Nike Sneakers such as Tinker Hatfield and Bruce Kilgore.

  10. Hi! Great post on the new sneakers and the history of MJ and Air Jordans! This was a sweet read. I have never been much of a fanatic about sneakers, wearing them when necessary, but this makes me want to buy a pair right now. My husband says I have too many shoes already, though. I think that you covered the history of these very well, and the back story is a treasure. I love that you also pointed out the pros and cons. I read through some of your other posts on other sneakers. You cover everything very thoroughly. I like the setup of your website, it is easy to navigate, and definitely shows the niche that you have chosen. I am still learning how to put links in, so you are much further along than I am. Perhaps you could give me some pointers on my own website.

Keep up the informative posts, I look forward to reading more about sneakers. I learned more today than I ever thought it was possible to know about this subject. I personally like the green striped pair!

Everything from the organization and layout of your post to the attention to detail when talking about the history of the shoe and Michael Jordan himself was spot on. Through and through, this was a great sneaker review and it is something that really informed me on the Air Jordan 4’s

  14. What perfect timing with the “Last Dance” just finishing up.  Air Jordan’s have been around since I was kid, and boy have they changed.  I didn’t even recognize them.  My first thought was one of your con’s.  How do you keep them clean?

I still think that people absolutely are obsesssed with his shoes and for good reason.  Anything like a shoe that can last the test of time and keep reinventing itself is a great product.

I really enjoyed reading your post, so really good job.

  16. Hi Ahmad

I cannot believe that the Air Jordan has been out for that long and that the designers continually find new improvements to make. I think that the new design look simply  stunning and I could imagine using a pair. If they are as good as previous versions then you could say that I will be walking on air. My question what improves have been made to this version of the Air Jordan that was not in previous versions?

Thank you for an interesting review.
