History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 14 History

The Air Jordan 14 was first introduced in 1998-1999, designed by Tinker Hatfield. This was the last signature Jordan sneaker that Michael Jordan has worn before his second retirement from the NBA. Did you know that the Air Jordan 14 was inspired by MJ old car, the Ferrari F355 F1? Tinker wanted the Jordan 14s to be fast, with razor-like sharpness, just like Ferrari.

The Air Jordan 14 was the first Jordan sneaker to feature sliver shoe lace tips, which had Jumpman logos on them. On each sneaker, there are a total of seven jumpman logos on them, which adds up to 14 (fun fact, isn’t it). This sneaker features low profile zoom air units, which help cool off your sweaty feet while playing basketball in them. These units are located at the forefoot, and heel of the shoe. It also features aerodynamic side panels, which braces the foot for stability. The Air Jordan 14 has a few minors unfortunately. The Phylon Midsole would crease very quickly. Also, over time, the toe box area of the sneaker would come unglued.

Back in 1998-1999, The Air Jordan 14 was originally retailed at $150.00, while the low versions were $130.00.

Features Of The Shoe

This sneaker shows a huge resemblance to the Air Jordan 14 Candy Cane; it is dressed in a white, red, black, and metallic silver color scheme. The leather upper is dressed in white, while varsity red can be seen on the midsole, heel area, and tongue area. Finally, it features the traditional shield logos on the side, carbon fiber plates by the midsole, and a white rubber outsole.

  1. Wow ! Am a fan of Michael Jordan, and I always want to have a complete collection of the legend’s items , especially the air Jordan series. This review has reminded me am lagging behind on the trophy on my shelf.

An ardent basketball player, I see it as an obligation to try special editions of the brand of sneakers from the greatest man to have ever played basketball.

    • Hello Olalekan, thanks for the comment. Feel free to check out my site more often, as I create content daily!

  2. I have to say I really love that these shoes are named after people of accomplishment.  It’s like wearing a little history on your feet while you’re walking around in style.  My son is a huge history buff, and I’m going to have him look into Rip Hamilton because my son’s best friend went to University of Connecticut.  My son loves white sneakers and he loves red and black, so this could be a perfect shoe for him for many reasons.

    • Hello Babs, thanks for the comment. Your son would definitely adore these, let him know about this blog.

  3. This Jordan sneakers has got the right look, I’m just so happy it’s going to be released sooner than later it also Bears many a similarity to the AJ14 Candy Cane Rip’s kicks combine a premium white leather base with bold red accents on the midsole and heel. Black is then used on the midfoot’s carbon fiber plate. But nevertheless all I can say is this is my multi purpose sneaker. Love it.

  4. I have always loved the styling of Air Jordans. As an athletic shoe the Jordan is superior in many ways and has been designed by athletes for athletes. I loved the way you presented the bio’s on both Michael Jordan and Rip Hamilton and included their many accolades. While I am past my athletic prime I have several teenagers who look to be High School athletes, two of who are interested in basketball. I will be sure they look at this article because they seem to be stuck on Adidas and to many, those are inferior shoes.

    • Hello Andy, thanks for the comment. Feel free to come back and check out my site for more upcoming sneaker news!!

  5. Hello Ahmad! I like these kicks! And I have always admired Rip Hamilton. So I’ll definitely take a pair of these home.

There are many key moments I can still recall from the 2004 NBA Championship. One of those memorable games was Game 3 of the NBA final against the Lakers, were Rip Hamilton scored 31 points. Now that’s impressive!

  6. Hello, thanks for this informative post. Have actually heard about the Air Jordan sneakers, but I have not been to keen on getting one for myself as I didn’t think there is anything special with the Air Jordan sneakers. At a point I just felt it was over hyped but seeing this review just made me more interested in getting one for myself. I will just pick from these list and see how amazing these sneakers are. Thanks!

  7. Hi Ahmad,

What a beautiful Sneaker – Air Jordan 14 Rip Hamilton. I am a great fan of Richard Hamilton, besides Michael Jordan. They are my great motivators when l am playing for my school basketball team.

I really love the white, red, black, and metallic silver color scheme. It’s just awesome and l just can’t get my hand on it now. But one thing l am worried about the no return policy, what if the size does fit me? What l can do because this is my first time to purchase an item on eBay?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

    • Hello Shui, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, most Ebay sellers do not include a return policy, sorry. If you do plan to make a ebay purchase, carefully check to see if the seller is legitimate (ensuring that he have high ratings, positive feedback for purchasers, a great description on the product).

  8. Wow! I had no idea that these shoes were based off of history! I’ve always been a fan of Michael Jordan. His leadership on the court has always been admirable! He made the other team members play their best. How did Nike choose RIP to base this latest shoe off of?

  9. Awesome post!… I am a huge Jordan fan always have been. I really enjoyed reading the detailed accomplishments that you listed over the years. The Nike endorsement background really caught my attention. Now that I think about it I don’t remember Nike being hot without Jordan. So that was interesting!… Your content is full of useful info. I like that you are educating your readers about your product. Beautiful work!

  13. Oh I’ve been anticipating this model. I love Air Jordan sneakers and I like the white-red combination color. Before I made my decision to buy this, do you know other sneakers (preferably Nike, Adidas, or New Balance) that have similar design with this Rip Hamilton variant? I want to compare the design and budget, because I’ve been looking for this kind of color. Thanks 🙂

    • Hello Alblue, thanks for the comment. There is a new silhouette that takes inspiraton from the Air Jordan 14; the Jordan Jumpman Z. Go on ebay, and type in that keyword and see what you can find.

  14. Great post!!! I loved watching basketball when Michael Jordan was playing for the Bulls. I was a huge Bulls fan back in those days. Basketball just doesn’t seem the same since Jordan and Shaq where playing.  The shoe looks fantastic.  A little expensive for my taste, but I can see this shoe going off the shelves when the basketball enthusiast are able to start acquiring them.  Thanks for your post.

  16. The Air Jordan is a household name in the sneakers brands. This name goes with a long history in performance and quality delivery.

I really have no doubt that the air Jordan 14 will be any different. We all expect the same top quality aesthetic designs from Nike, and it seem to look even better in picture. Absolutely cool, can’t wait to get my hands on this!

  18. Great article. Jordan brand is an brand of quality products and I have used and will still use  their products. Though I know little about the story behind the brand you have helped me with better understanding. I love using the brand especially when playing basketball with my daughter, it is either Jordan brand or nothing for her. She loves it so much and I love her so much so I love the brand too. Thanks for sharing this .

    • Hello Jay, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker content!

  19. Wow! So much history! Air Jordan brand has so much history wrapped around it. And it’s amazing that it has carried on for two decades now.

That’s undoubtedly a testament to the authenticity and quality the kicks have offered all these years.

I don’t want to believe that all its success is owed to the influence of Michael Jordan alone. Because if people didn’t get quality, they wouldn’t have followed the brand till date.

I believe that just like the Air Jordan 14 Candy Cane kicks were a huge sellout, the Air Jordan 14 Rip Hamilton will beat that record on its release on the 6th of this month.

    • Hello Peace, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker news!

  20. My son is the biggest Micheal Jordan ever. He has most of the Air Jordans ever made. Thank you for alerting me of this Richard Hamilton tribute shoe. He was a great player! I think the shoe looks fantastic, and it is going to make a great birthday gift for my son! Do you know if Nike is planning any other tribute shoes next year?

Thanks again for the timely review.

The new air Jordan boots have some amazing look and it’s a multi purpose sneakers with a great look. I would love to have this as soon as the release date is up, the price is pocket friendly. 22. Hi Ahmad, I am a huge fan of Michael Jordan. His antecedents serves as a motivational spur for the younger ones especially those that have avid interest in basketball. MJ is a one hell of a determined fellow, who didn’t allow the rejection of Adidas and Converse to affect him from reaching his career peak. I must say kudos to his old agent, David Falk for his insightfulness and decision to work with Nike.

The features of the shoe is great, especially the colour combination, it will surely be a hit.

    • Hello Gracen, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more updates!

  23. Thank you for a very in depth article! You often don’t hear about the different sneakers, you just see a picture and a price.

It’s nice to see a little more of the story behind the sneaker, and why it’s called what it is.

Thank you again for the nice article, and i’ll definitely be back!

    All the best

    • Hello Sebastian, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more updates!

  24. Wow… I’m so happy, I can’t see any way Jordan could honor and pay tribute to this great legend of basketball  – Richard Hamilton than to name one of their products after him. Richard has left a mark in the sand of time in basketball and deserve such honor. Although I’m not a big fan of Jordan Brand but this gesture alone has endeared my heart to them.

    • Hello Sammy, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker news!

  25. Great read. it is nice knowing the history of great men like Richard Hamilton and Michael Jordan that played a crucial role in developing the basketball game. You did a good job on the history surrounding the Air Jordan brand. The Air Jordan is a well-known brand, not only because of MJ name attached to it, but also its durability, ruggedness, and authenticity. The brands sell for themselves. I have the air Jordan 11 and I can say it is good value for money. I would consider soon the Air Jordan 14,  and the name synonyms with people like MJ sells for its self.

    • Hello Tolu, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker news!

  26. Recently, I stumbled at a documentary which featured football celebrities, dorning their branded kits. It was such a beauty to behold. The likes of Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar Jnr., and a host of others. NBA celebrities are equally not left out of this show. Many are already promotional ambassadors to the manufacturers of these kits. It turns a win-win relationship, after all.

  27. This is a wonderful and carefully reviewed product. I actually read over and over in order to be convinced. Its only possible to have good result when all factors are put into consideration. 28. Thanks for writing this review on Air Jordan 14 Rip Hamilton. I must commend you for taking a well done job for taking your time to write this review I find it both informative ,educative on things I don’t even know about my favourite show company. Nike has been in the business for something now and over the year they have been producing nice products in which Air Jordan 14 Rip Hamilton I done of it and am sure it going to be a quality product. Looking at the picture alone I already love every part of the shoe with the colour and the feature it has.

  29. Hey Ahmad,

I’ve really enjoyed reading this article as you’ve provided us with tonnes of valuable information on Air Jordan 14. I wanna buy this shoe as soon as possible because it’s within my budget. I wanna ask you one question though. Is it waterproof? In other words, is it water resistant? I mean I’ll still buy it anyway, but I’m just asking.

Thanks for answering my question and for this detailed review. Keep up the good work Ahmad!

    • Hello AV2001, thanks for the comment. After some research, I have found out that these are not waterproof. But, there was a Jordan sneaker that I came across that includes this feature: Air Jordan 12 Neoprene. You can find this sneaker on Ebay.
