History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 11 History

The Air Jordan 11 was first introduced back in 1995-1996, during Michael Jordan’s return to the NBA. Tinker Hatfield came up with the idea to make the shoe look like a shiny body convertible, so the sneaker was created with shiny patent leather. It also has a lightweight Phylon midsole with a full length air sole unit and full length carbon fiber plate, making it extremely supportive. The only bad things about the shoes were poor traction, defects on the outsole, and fast creases on the midsoles.

In 1995, the retail price for the shoes were $125.00 (the low versions were $115.00).

Features Of The Shoe

This shoes features a constructed white leather upper. You will also notice the black hits on the Jumpman and”23″ logos on the heels, and branding on the tongue. Additionally, it features a white midsole, along with the traditional icy translucent outsole for a nice look. Finally, it has a textured navy blue leather constructed on the mudguard (Back in 2001, this was the first Air Jordan 11 to not feature the signature patent leather upper. Instead, it was replaced with this type of material).

  2. Wow! You really have Michael Jordan’s career down! I’m feeling very old that you actually have a section explaining who Michael Jordan is! I don’t (and didn’t) watch basketball then, but everyone knew him in the 90’s. An amazing athlete. The shoes are pretty nifty too! Not quite my style, but it brings back memories. I’m definitely going to have to check out your other sneakers. I love my tennies!

  3. This article is great because it highlight the history of the basketball player Michael Jordan and of the clothing company Nike. Honestly I did not know a lot of the information that you gave in this article and it gives cool information on what companies go through for their products. I like the blue outline on the shoes as well.

  4. Hi Ahmad,

Super interesting! One can only imagine how different things would be if MJ had signed with Adidas and Converse. We would potentially be down a brand of fantastic basketball sneakers!

  5. I have always been a big Air Jordan’s fan. I can remember as a kid that only the coolest of the cool kids had these on my block and if you wore them to school, you were instant gold.

I see the design is coming out in line with the general chunkier look that the fashion industry is currently promoting. Will they be releasing a High Top version too or is this the only version that will be released to the market?

    • Hello Rich, thanks for the comment. The Air Jordan 11 is available in high top, which have tons of unique colorways such as the iconic Bred colorway. I am not sure if they are going to release a high top version of the 11s in this snakeskin colorway though.

  6. Who doesn’t love Michael Jordan!? I was never a massive basketball fan, but my brother loved Michael Jordan when we were growing up, and I’m absolutely certain he will love these shoes. Lucky for him, it’s his birthday coming up early next month, and I hope he loves his birthday present!

  7. Oh my word, I didn’t know that the Air Jordan’s were named after a basketball legend. I loved how the introduction of the article was highlighting the history of the sneaker, that really captured my attention. I am not a Nike fan but now I’m tempted to buy these Jordan’s 🤦‍♀️🙃. I loved the article and the simplicity, it actually left me hungry for more.

Now I’ll searching more about sneakers I buy for the future. Lovely article .

  8. Oh the details! this shoe is exciting and you did a wonderful job bringing it to the public. Back in the day Air Jordans was the shoe of choice. As you said it’s good to see them back on top, 18 years later. My teenage years have never had the thrill of wearing a good pair of Air Jordans, even though his dad had several pairs, maybe too many. Maybe we can bring that Jordan fever back to the household with the Jordan 11 Classic and reminisce about what used to be. Good job with this review.

    • Hello Coach, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker blogs!

  10. Hello, I really appreciate your time and effort on writing about Air Jordan shoes.

From your post it’s obvious that these shoes have a long history, as a 90’s kid I grew up hearing about Michael Jordan all the time and his name come up a lot in television and commercials. If you wore Michael Jordan gear in the 90’s you were one of the popular kids for sure.

The Air Jordan 11 looks better than ever, I really like the blue color and overall design of the shoe. Thanks for the article.

    • Hello Son, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker blogs in the future!

  11. Wow, nice to see these Air Jordan 11 Low Blue Snakeskin sneakers be reintroduced to the market. They are indeed classics and they look really cool. These are kicks that just never go out of style, as Michael Jordan does not for me. He was the best, I know that people will argue that point, but my mind is made up…

These kicks are also some of the best in styling, looks, and comfort. I have had more than one pair over the years, although it has been a long time ago now. since I have worn them. I will snap these up and thanks for the heads up. This is what I like about your website, you always have your ear to the ground for us.

Keep on doin’ what your doin’! We all appreciate you!

    • Hello Dave, thanks for the comment. I will continue to keep you posted so stay tuned!

I was looking for pics of new shoes before I went and bought a pair. Your article was great and has me thinking about a new pair of snakeskin Jordans.

Thank you for your articles I went through a bunch of your previous ones and found all of them to be great, keep previewing these sneakers man great work.

  14. Hi Ahmad

Nice review. I am so amazed that Air Jordans are even on the market. I wonder if Lebron will ever really be this popular.

16 years out of the playing league and he still gets the props. Back in the day, I had Jordan high-tops, of course, worn unlaced. 🙂

Do you happen to know how much they weight?

    • Hello Dave, thanks for the comment. I happen to own a pair of Air Jordan 11s. I have put the sneaker on a scale, and they weight very close to 0 pounds since they are extremely light weighted.

  15. Hello Ahmad, l am a big fan of Michael Jordan since childhood and never missed watching his matches. He is a role model for young kids who loves basketball and l can proudly tell my son about this great athlete.

I have a collection of Air Jordan clothing and this Air Jordan 11 low blue snakeskin 2019 is beautiful. I can’t get my hand on it now but surely it’s will be on my wish list.

  16. Hi

Thank you very much for the review of Air Jordan, as it looks like a shoe that anybody would like to wear and I am no different.  As long as it is comfortable, long lasting and stylish, I will wear it, and these shoes almost certainly match the brief.

I am old enough to remember Micheal Jordan and I hope the shoes last as long as he did.

    Thank You

    • Hello Tony, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker blogs!

  17. Wow! Thank you for sharing this post. Well! This is a yummy coffee to me. Firstly, you captured my total attention with all the facts you stated about Michael Jordan which I don’t know before. Then you gave an in depth history of the air Jordan series. I was thrilled. Then the product is a sweetheart. I have watched some videos about it on YouTube but this is more deep. I love the air Jordan’s and this will be my latest collection. The price is still manageable though.

    • Hello Darrick, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker content!

  18. Wow, those are great sneakers! Will they be available for UK deliveries?  Thanks for the well written post about Michael Jordan, he is a legend.  I had a pair of leather women Nike Air sneakers years ago and it was like walking on air – I have not found any pair like it ever again.  I definitely like the look of those sneakers only if they were all leather and not white…

    • Hello Kim, thanks for the comment. Yes, ebay ships internationally.

  19. Great review! I love how you gave a whole history of Michael Jordan. As a younger person, I didn’t know much about Michael Jordan until you gave this review. I’m just wondering though, are these shoes for everyday wear, basketball only, or both? I always see people saying how you shouldn’t wear basketball shoes when you’re not playing basketball yet others are still wearing them outside and such. Thanks!

  20. Nice review of the Air Jordan 11 Low Blue Snakeskin 2019. As expected, my teenage son moved closer to the computer when he saw your blog and the picture of the Air Jordan sneakers. This led to an interesting discussion on prices and styles and he wanted to see your other posts.

    Thanks for the informative article.
