History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 10 History

The Air Jordan 10 was originally released back in 1994, created by Tinker Hatfield. This was the second pair of Jordans that has released during Michael Jordan’s professional baseball career. Due to MJ’s departure from the NBA, everyone, including Nike, thought that the Air Jordan line was finished, but Hatfield thought differently.

At first, MJ disapproved of the 10s since they featured a extra leather toe cap. MJ has talked to Hatfield about making changes to the 10s, but it was too late to do so since the first colorway (The Steel Grey) have already started hitting the shoes stores. But there was still some time to make changes for future 10 releases, and the toe cap was removed from the 10s and it had a much cleaner look to them.

The Air Jordan 10 features Huarache inner sleeves, leather uppers, and a quick lacing system. MJ started to wear the 10s when he returned to the NBA. The 10s that he wore featured his number 45 on the side of the shoes. Hatfield wanted to show his appreciation for MJ accomplishments during his professional basketball career in the NBA, since everyone thought that MJ was retiring from the sport for good.

On the outsole of the 10s, you will notice a list of Michael’s milestones for every year in the NBA from 1985 to 1994:

  • 1985- ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
  • 1986- 63 POINTS
  • 1987- SCORING TITLE
  • 1988- DUNK CHAMP
  • 1989- ALL DEFENSE
  • 1990- SCORES 63 POINTS
  • 1991- MVP/CHAMPIONSHIP
  • 1992- MVP/CHAMPIONSHIP
  • 1993- MVP/CHAMPIONSHIP
  • 1994- BEYOND

The Air Jordan 10 was originally retailed for $125.00 during it’s first release in 1994.

  5. I love to see that the 1995 air Jordans are making a comeback, in my opinion these sneakers are timeless.

I like all the history on the air Jordans that you have added, this is interesting. It was iconic that a sports star actually made a brand of himself that still lives on.

I like these kinds of sneakers as they both look good and in general they are very comfortable and they give you the support that you need both for your feet but also for your back.

I will definitely check back to see if I can get myself a pair of these new Air Jordans.

  8. It’s much more interesting to buy sneakers when you know the history behind it. Michael Jordan is one of the greatest names in the sport of all time. And Nike is still super popular. I see Nike shoes on every second person in my gym.

Who would recall now Nike was struggling in 1984.

  9. Wow, I have been a sneaker green since my school days and I don’t regret spending my money and any of the Jordan Nike sneakers so far. My love for these sneakers started from the last year Michael Jordan played his last before retirement and my love for the player was transfered to the shoe. First I must confess my love for the shape of this sneaker and aside that, its color is pretty cool. I was expecting i at a more expensive price, and for this price, its something I can go with. A really cool sneaker it is.

  10. Hi Ahmad,

This looks like a great shoe. I am pretty sure that Michael Jordan wouldn’t put his name on a poor quality product. It wouldn’t do Nike any good either due to bad publicity.

I assume that it would be super comfortable, but it looks great. I like the style and it is good to see that classic styling is still relevant today.

  11. My son has been wearing and collecting Air Jordans for years. He is 39 years old and married and the Air Jordans are setting in his closet in my house. You gave a very thorough history of Michael Jordans career, the history of the brand and details when the sneaker originally came out.. Also, the graphics and images of the new sneaker were great. Great post.

  13. There are a few professional athletes I remember watching vividly growing up and one of them was Michael Jordan. Not only was he clutch on offense, his defense and leadership skills set him apart. I appreciate the background info on MJ as it is kind of a nostalgic reminder especially of the UNC days. With the Seattle SuperSonics I think of names like Shawn Kemp, Kevin Durant and Gary Payton. These stir up exciting memories and I could see how people would flock to the Air Jordan 10 Seattle’s. I know some sneaker heads who would find your site interesting and I’ll definitely share with them, great post!

  14. Ah, Air Jordans. Still there is no better feeling than unboxing a new pair of Air Jordans. At least for us how are into sports or in this brand. Air Jordan 10 Seattle is a nice redesign that brings back the time, as you stated. A lot of history that was written into basketball with Jordan’s legacy brings even more value to this awesome sneakers.

    Lovely website by the way.

  15. What a great looking shoe! And I love the fact that they are bringing back a product from 1995. My son is only 13, so these were long before his time.

I’m so happy I found this site, and right before the October 19 release date! I’ll be ordering these and saving them for Christmas. Thank you so much!

  16. Awesome information! I had no idea that Michael Jordan did not even want to promote Nike at first, I wonder what the landscape of sneakers would look like if he had chosen Adidas or Converse? I also can’t believe that 35 years after initially signing with Nike that they are still coming out with new shoes. He hasn’t even played in almost 20 years! And I am sure that they will fly off the shelves, even at $190! I doubt it is coincidence that the holiday season is right around the corner.

  17. That is some really great and interesting history of Michael’s Jordan’s career. Considering that he was one popular guy, this sneakers are sure to make a big impression Nike is a great brand too. I love the simple yet stylish design that the shoes posses. These sneakers will make the perfect gift for the MJ and Nike enthusiasts. Thank you for this suggestion.
