History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background.

Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”. MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 1 History

The Air Jordan 1 was first introduced way back in 1984-1985, created by Peter Moore. Michael Jordan has become the Rookie Of The Year, and played in the All-Star game. It was the first basketball shoe wore in the NBA that featured multiple colors. MJ first disliked the sneaker, but started to grew on him overtime.

During that time, the famous sneaker was banned by Commissioner of the NBA, David Stern, since the sneakers didn’t follow the standard uniform policy and the sneaker had to be 50% white. MJ wasn’t allowed to wear the shoes on the court, but MJ refused to play without them anyways. He was fined $2,000 for every time he worn the sneakers on the court. However, Nike has covered the fines, and also gave the Air Jordan 1 the “The Shoe Banned By The NBA” label.

There were over 23 different color variations released, and the Air Jordan 1 also came with two sets of shoe laces that matched the colorway on the sneakers. The shoe was originally retailed at $65.00.

  1. Great, thanks for sharing this good news. I really love the design of the Royal Toe,especially the color! Generally, I like blue color the most out of other colors. However, I rarely find blue color on sneakers that suit my taste. This is a must-have for me. I’ll check on my favorite local store to pre-order it. Thank you

  3. Hey man,

I purchased some Jordans last year and they are still pretty much in good condition. I wear them multiple times a week and I can’t believe how good they still are. I’m looking at getting some more Jordans and these ones look amazing. I like the blue colorway because that is my favorite color, and the retail price of $170 is a no-brainer. I paid a lot more for my other Jordans. Thanks!

  4. Incredible! I didn’t realise MJ was not allowed to wear those shoes and was fined every time. How amazing that he stuck to what he loved and I believe gave the brand the true recognition it deserves.

This new model is stunning and I love the colours too.

Without Nike and Air Jordon, the game wouldn’t be the same. These super athletes need to wear the best and MJ certainly showed everyone he meant business when he came onto the court.

Such a great share thank you

  5. Hi Ahmad, I am not a big sports fan or shoe buff, but those are great looking shoes! When I went to college there was a guy who collected shoes. I don’t remember how many he had, but it was quite a few.

I would say those Air Jordans would be a collectors item. They look too nice to wear! Luv the look!

  6. It is crazy, I have never been a fan of Air Jordan or any sneakers for that matter. But here am I today 45 years old just read your review and about to be bitten by the Air Jordan bug. I have been thinking about changing the kind of active shoes I currently wear. Because of some various reasons but not in my wildest dreams have I thought of Air Jordan sneakers.

But after this review, I think I might just as well go on Air Jordan sneakers shopping. I know someone might say I am too old for those but after seeing them on video review, I just love them. One of the fascinating factors about them is that they look to me like they are fit for both neutral and low/fallen arch types of foot of which they will be a perfect fit for me. Since I have a low arch type of foot.

Well, I am not really sure if I am right in saying that they are fit for low/fallen arch types of foot. Can you please fill me in, in that respect. Because I would really like to be sure of that. For the comfort and as such health of my feet.

    Thanks

I really like your article about Air Jordan 1 which has prompted me to buy something for my brother’s birthday and he is a Michael Jordon fan.

I like the link and history that you have added into this article as it is so informative and gives people more of a reason to associate to these trainers if that is of preference for them.

    Great article full of information

  11. Love the color you can not go wrong with blue anything let alone Air Jordan! I really like the design on this one. The best part however has to be the fact it runs narrow, most Jordans are wide and for someone like my son with an extra narrow foot it is so hard to buy for. This is on the top of the buying list right now. Great review

  12. Wow!  Air Jordan basketball shoes are an institution and just seem to be getting better.
I really enjoyed reading your history of this.
It is also amazing the read the history of Nike, that they were struggling back in 1984, so this shoe was a big breakthrough for them.  Also the Vaporfly in the last year of so has revolutionised things in the running world.  It was genius for Michael Jordan, his manager to launch this shoe.

Can I ask, do many of the current NBA players wear them now?  Or is there far better technology on the basketball court these days?

Thank you for your comprehensive review, I know everything about this sneakers now.

    • Hello John, thanks for the comment. The material of the sneaker is the same, but it has been remastered throughout the years. I have looked around and there are other Nike Shoes that are being worn by NBA players while on the court.

  13. Ahmad, thank you for this review of the Air Jordan 1! I a pleased to see how much effort you put into discussing the history behind the Jordan Shoe models, speaking about Michael Jordan and his career highlights and rewards. While I don’t think anyone doesn’t know of him, many people (myself included) do not know about him. Now, thank’s to your breakdown, I am informed on the 1984 beginnings of the Brand and how Nike almost went under. The shoes themselves are historic and look absolutely fantastic. I’d love to own a pair. An excellent article!

  14. wow, great article Ahmad, the Air Jordans are such a classic, is great how your started with about of history about the it, including the part where they were launch, not many people remember that.

I also love this new pair, with the throwback to the classic first one, is the best, I love retro styles and nothing beats the #1. I’ll sure be trying to get my hand in one of those, all the best, take care and have a great day.

I will realy try to get one of these for myself. Thanks so much for the post

  16.  These shoes right here though, I love these colors together. The fact that they have a cool story behind them too gives them that extra “I want them” factor. I like a lot of stories like these, where someone, in this case, Michael Jordan, rebels against the system for making stupid rules.

  17. Wow 35 years later and the Air Jordan1 is still dope! And that Royal Blue colorway is a hit! This article takes me down memory lane. Growing up in the mid west you had to have the latest pair of Air Jordans. I have a cousin that still to this day Jordans is the only gym shoe that he will buy. Michael Jordan a true LEGEND on and off the court!

    • Hello 👋, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker content!

  18. Hey Ahmad.

This was a unique side. I have never been to a website that explains sneakers and unique detail like you have. I really appreciate the history that you decided to give call Michael Jordan. Because a lot of people know him as a great basketball player, but do not know the history of how he came to be. This article laid out some of those facts and I was very appreciative of those facts. I am not the biggest fan of sneakers, however I can understand that there’s a niche and a fanbase for sneakers like these. Currently I own one pair of sneakers, and I do play basketball. But I really can’t see myself buying sneakers anytime soon. Haha. What are some of your favorite sneakers?

    • Hello Jerome, thanks for the comment. My favorite sneakers of all time are the Air Jordan 11 Bred. There are no sneakers that can top them!
