History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background.

Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”. MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 1 History

The Air Jordan 1 was first introduced way back in 1984-1985, created by Peter Moore. Michael Jordan has become the Rookie Of The Year, and played in the All-Star game. It was the first basketball shoe wore in the NBA that featured multiple colors. MJ first disliked the sneaker, but started to grew on him overtime.

During that time, the famous sneaker was banned by Commissioner of the NBA, David Stern, since the sneakers didn’t follow the standard uniform policy and the sneaker had to be 50% white. MJ wasn’t allowed to wear the shoes on the court, but MJ refused to play without them anyways. He was fined $2,000 for every time he worn the sneakers on the court. However, Nike has covered the fines, and also gave the Air Jordan 1 the “The Shoe Banned By The NBA” label.

There were over 23 different color variations released, and the Air Jordan 1 also came with two sets of shoe laces that matched the colorway on the sneakers. The shoe was originally retailed at $65.00.

Features Of The Shoe

This sneaker consists of the classic UNC and Chicago Bulls colorways, in which MJ played for during his basketball career. The sneaker is also constructed with patent leather. Additionally, if you look inside the shoe at the insoles, you will notice the word “FEAR” that is crossed out, and a quote from MJ’s speech:

“LIMITS, LIKE FEAR, ARE OFTEN JUST AN ILLUSION”.

To top things off, the Nike Air Branding can be found on the tongue, while the sneaker consist of gold holographic wing logos by the ankles.

  1. I think that there is actually an air Jordan shoe that isn’t dedicated to Michael Jordan, but his speech. How cool is that? I know my son would love these shoes and I know they are worth the money, but the cost is a bit too much out of my budget. My son will have to just dream a little.

  3. Although I am not a “sneaker head” my grandchildren are.  I think you article has given me much more information about this new sneaker than they will have. The list of MJ’s accomplishments was great.  I have never seen all of that laid out like you have done it.  Are the sneakers offered in adult sizes only?  One of my grandson’s is a new teenager and does not wear adult size shoes yet.  I also appreciate the fact that you offered a price reference.  My grandson’s are going to be amazed when I ask them about this shoe.  Thanks for the article.

    • Hello Anastazja, thanks for the comment. These will be available only in Men’s sizing (8-14).

  4. Air Jordan is the classic, all my friends have at least one pair and they just cherish them lol. Thanks for the fun fact on the history of Michael Jordan, he was really big back in the days. This will be a perfect birthday gift for my husband. I am surprised that the price is not that bad and I love the color!

  5. Wow! virtually most of the air jordan sneakers have a story or two that are attached to them and that to me, is really great to see. Thank you so much for giving this much information about the great michael Jordan and his various exploits in the world of basketball. I am a big fan of his and everything he has done in the game. I love the colour blend of the Air Jordan 1 High Fearless. It looks very sleek and great to behold. Hence, should be a worthy purchase.

  6. These shoes are absolutely amazing!  My wife and me both love the Air Jordans and mostly because of Michael Jordan and the quality of the shoes themselves. Space Jam is the reason I like him so much, and the fact he is, in my opinion, the greatest basketball player ever!  I am excited about these shoes, and I think they would make a great Christmas gift!

  7. Air Jordans would make a really good gift, wouldn’t they?
I was just searching for a clean-looking, shiny pair of basketball shoes for indoor use.
Thank you so much for this review, Nike always has a way to produce great looking sneakers.
It’s really nice they give you 3 pairs of differently colored extra laces along with this 10th year anniversary edition. When it comes to durability & quality, Nike & Jordan have always been among the very best.
Apart from the good looks, this pair is going to moderately expensive & fortunately well within reasonable price range.

  8. These are some solid sneakers! I love the backstories of the shoes that you put on here! I find it amusing that Jordan wore the shoes even after David Stern banned them. I find it even more funny that Nike paid the fines for him! I wonder what would happen today if something like that were to happen? These are perfect shoes, combining the colors of UNC and the Bulls, just greatness! I want a pair!

  9. Learning about basketball is a fine thing for me and i have been a fan of Michael Jordan since high school and have kept track for all his records ever since. Nike is one company that we know for giving their best when it has to do with the quality of a product and from these shoes that have been producing, it is one of the best I have seen so far. I love the style and colour of this shoe and sometimes i just wish if I was a boy.

  10. Fantastic write up about a legend. I never knew he had so many accomplishments. I like the caption on the trainer but wouldn’t spend that much personally for a trainer. As it’s a brand linked to Michael Jordan I know there would be a big demand for these. I bet many would be queuing up on the 2nd of November to get their pairs. Thanks for the post.
