History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 1 History

The Air Jordan 1 was first introduced way back in 1984-1985, created by Peter Moore. Michael Jordan has become the Rookie Of The Year, and played in the All-Star game. It was the first basketball shoe wore in the NBA that featured multiple colors. MJ first disliked the sneaker, but started to grew on him overtime.

During that time, the famous sneaker was banned by Commissioner of the NBA, David Stern, since the sneakers didn’t follow the standard uniform policy and the sneaker had to be 50% white. MJ wasn’t allowed to wear the shoes on the court, but MJ refused to play without them anyways. He was fined $2,000 for every time he worn the sneakers on the court. However, Nike has covered the fines, and also gave the Air Jordan 1 the “The Shoe Banned By The NBA” label.

There were over 23 different color variations released, and the Air Jordan 1 also came with two sets of shoe laces that matched the colorway on the sneakers. The shoe was originally retailed at $65.00.

Features Of The Shoe

This sneaker features the classic “Black Toe” scheme, and also features a premium tumbled leather. Additionally, you will notice the red stitching throughout the shoe, along with the red swooshes on the outer lateral side of the sneaker which is unfinished. It also comes with removable swooshes, and bright yellow swoosh can be found on the inner lateral side of the shoe.

  1. I think it’s now time for me to change my preferred brand from Adidas to Nike and this time, I will try this Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG. But before that, I’d like to know first if, unlike other brands with durability in question, if I keep this pair of shoes for months inside a locker, will it not wear out? Or, are all shoes vulnerable to wearing out when stocked inside a locker for long periods of time?

    • Hello Gomer, thanks for the comment. The sneaker will only wear out if you wear them. But the sneakers can age overtime if kept in deadstock position for a long time.

  2. Wow, $2,000 fine for each game he plays covered by Nike? Somehow I got super motivated by MJ’s story and how Nike backs him up every time, they really are a great duo that shows people like us need to hustle in life to get to where we want to be. Although the NBA thinks it’s not white enough, I think Nike’s got the colour’s right and the Air Jordan 1 is definitely a legendary must-have, can’t wait for its release! 😀

  3. I’ve been looking for some Air Jordans to buy for the birthday of my brother since he loves those kinds of shoes so much but after seeing those Air Jordans 1 High Defiant Tour Yellow I feel like I should buy them for myself…

Am I a bad brother? Haha just kidding…

I’ll just look around for a while just for fun although I know that I’ll end up buying those!

    Thanks a lot!

  4. Hi! It was interesting to see the distinctive Nike sign in these sneakers. Yes, it looks like if somebody used a razor to take out the Nike sign. It’s kinda creative! And another distinctive feature is that only the left shoe has the yellow check. Kinda cool! I hadn’t seen these things on any other Nike sneaker, and I like them!

  5. I love that you’ve got a summary of all of MJ’s highlights of his career! It’s always amazing to see in hindsight just how awesome his career has been with his talent inspiring so many people. It’s also incredible that the NBA had such an issue with the shoes, but to MJ’s credit, he wore them despite the fines. That says something about his character and shoes that he had a commitment to his sponsor as well as get on with the game! These latest shoes look amazing as always. It’s great to keep up to date with each release.

  6. Wow these are like works of Art. We tend not to get these types of sneakers in the UK – Only at really specialist retailers. I don’t know much about basketball but I just “know” the name Michael Jordan.

He is an Icon of sport in general and to me is the ultimate “local boy made good”

These sneakers are amazing, when I get to visit the states I will definitely seek some Air Jordan’s out.

Thank you for the great information

  9. Thanks for this interesting article about Air Jordan Sneakers. I love it that you wrote the whole story about how Michael Jordan and Nike got connected. I have never heard about it. By the way, Air Jordan 1 still look very cool, after so many years.

It was a very smart move by Nike to turn to rookie Michael Jordan.

  10. Hey Ahmad,

I enjoyed reading your article. Thanks for the heads up on the new Jordans coming out. I love what you’re doing with the website. The layout, the template, in the media you share. It’s very inspirational and also very insightful. It’s giving me ideas of what to do with my business. Personally, I love the retro air Jordan sevens the best. However, I have a soft spot in my heart for all Jordans. Used to have cancer in Make-A-Wish foundation almost granting me all the Jordans I ever wanted. From number one to number 20. However, I chose to go with a recording studio instead. And then I just bought Jordan slowly. Thanks again for the post.

  11. I’m so impressed with the historical background for the Air Jordan 1 Nike.

My son, all he dreams about is basketball. This pair of Nike sneakers will make a perfect birthday present. He will use them for playing basketball and he wears size 13. Do you think he will be able to get the right size?

I’ve bookmarked your post. Thanks this is really good stuff!

    • Hello Zebu, thanks for the comment. Most men’s sneakers run up to size 14, so you should be okay.

  12. Hi Ahmad Ballard!!
Wow, sneakers!! I always love to wear sneakers. But nothing I could wear like this you have shared. Sneakers are like a jet. It feels like flying while running. These are so comfortable and can be wore with casual dresses. However, I am very surprised heartthrob about Michael Jordan, specially his great earning of 6 time NBA champion. Moreover for 6 time NBA finalist. So wearing his wearings will be great happiness. Also satisfied to know the features of the sneaker. Thanks for the review

  13. oh Wow, not heard of this one before, I guess I don’t follow Nike Jordan as  much as I thought I did. I think this design is specially beautiful. It’s launching Tomorrow and I don’t have that much for my budget now, I think I’ll look out some others and save for another one. Thanks for the review, I’ll subscribe to your newsletter for update then

  14. I’ve only liked a handful of Air Jordans, and it’s been awhile since I’ve seen a pair that I really have taken to. But, the Air Jordan 1 High Defiant Tour Yellow looks decent and stylish. I’m not too bothered by sneakers that creases easily, so I can overlook that. But I love the colors and overall style of these!

    Great overview of them.

    • Hello Nate, thanks for the comment. Feel free to always check out my site for more upcoming sneaker news!!

  15. MJ is a LEGEND. So are these sneakers. I didn’t know anything about Nike’s history. It’s so amazing how they went from a struggling shoe company to one of the most famous brands out there in a few decades time. This is truly inspiring. I’m going to be first in line buying the new Air Jordans. Thanks for the heads up.
