History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him. Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”. MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 2 History

The Air Jordan 2 was originally released back in 1986, designed by Bruce Kilgore and Peter Moore. It was the first Air Jordan sneaker to NOT feature the Nike Swoosh. This sneaker was known by sneaker collector as the first “luxury” basketball shoe. The Air Jordan 2 comes with a length encapsulated Nike air bubble for maximum comfort. Michael Jordan has played the 1987 All-Star Game and his first Slam Dunk Contest in the Jordan 2s. The Air Jordan 2 released in high and low tops, and was retailed at $105.00.

  1. These look like an exciting pair of shoes for basketball fans, although I do think they are quite steeply priced from what I can see. Obviously Michael Jordan is a legend in this sport but I wonder whether you think the shoes are worth the price or are they mostly hyped up because of the Jordan name? I’d love to hear your opinion – also, if you can’t afford these ones, are there any other shoes you’d recommend instead which have similar features? I’m not into basketball in a big way, but my nephew loves it so it’s always a good source of presents for him. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    • Hello Gail, thanks for the comment. Today, Air Jordan sneakers are a hyped up trend, and people usually purchase them just for fashion and for collection purposes. If the sneaker is highly anticipated, then they will most definitely cost a fortune since it’s on high demand. Also, affordable sneakers can be found at footlocker, DTLR, YCMC, footaction, champs, just to name a few. Go and check them out whenever you have the time. Feel free to always check out my site for more sneaker news!!!

  2. I am not a fan of buying many expensive basketball shoes like most are. I always buy one pair and do not buy another until my previous pair become worn out. Though I totally understand the quality and the Air Jordan brand is what you are paying for, when I do buy, I always buy Nike Air Jordans.

These are a great looking design. I wasn’t much of a fan of Carmelo Anthony, despite his great numbers as a rookie. But when he became a NY Knicks player, and he was in the local media more, I started to admire his play more.

I am going to have to keep my eyes on these kicks. I am going to need new basketball shoes soon. I just may buy these. I know the quality will be top notch. Mike always makes a quality product. Thanks for the review.

  3. Air Jordan sneakers are a fashion phenomenon, this pair is no exception. It looks great and the colorway works well for the design. I would definitely buy this pair for a collection.

  4. I myself am not a basket ball fan but 2 of my grandsons play for their college but I loved seeing Michael Jordon flying through the air now I like Curry ( I watch the games with my grandsons) I know these basketball shoes can be expensive but people still buy them I found the information you provided very helpful in understanding why they are so expensive.

    • Hello Ruth, thanks for the comment. Regardless of the high price, most sneakerheads will pay that price for them, especially since they are highly anticipated. Feel free to always check back with my site for more upcoming sneaker news!!!

  5. Thanks for the review. The shoes are awesome and I think that they will be comfortable. Also thanks for adding the video. That person explained about the shoe in very detail ad I can see the 360-degree view and I can feel the quality of the shoe when I see that in the video. The price of the shoe in the video is 190$ but in the stores, it is more than 200$. But that’s not a big issue. Really thanks for this article about the Air Jordan.
