Carmelo Anthony’s High School Alma Mater

Carmelo Kyam Anthony is an American professional basketball player who is currently playing for the Houston Rockets. In 1999, During his first three years of high school, Melo has attended Towson Catholic High School in Baltimore County, Maryland (Closed since 2009). He has become The Baltimore Sun’s Metro Player Of The Year, and Baltimore Catholic League Player Of The Year in 2001. He has averaged 2 steals, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 14 points when he was a sophomore. During his junior year (his most successful year), he has averaged 10.3, and 23 points. Melo has started to become distracted by all of the attention he was getting, and skipped classes in which he was suspended for several times.

Carmelo has decided, before his senior year, that he would be attending Syracuse University. But Melo’s grades in class were poor, and his ACT scores were unacceptable as well. In order to become academically qualified for Syracuse, improving in class was mandatory. Melo’s mother has transferred him to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth Of Wilson, Virginia, for his senior year (thanks to the recommendation of Oak Hill’s Head Basketball Coach, Steve Smith).

Melo has lead an AAU Baltimore Select Team to the Final Four of the Adidas Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas during the summer of 2001, where he has averaged 25.2 points a game. This has caught the NBA’s attention. He has also helped the East Team win the silver medal at the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival. At the tournament, he has also become friends with Lebron James.

Oak Hill has entered the 2001-2002 campaign. Melo has won MVP in the team first tournament win in the Les Schwab Invitational against Mater Dei High School. Oak Hill has also won two more big tournaments. In the Nike Academy National Invitational, they have beaten Westchester High School in the final (77-61). They also defeated St. Mary High School (The team that LeBron James has played for) 72-66. Oak Hill’s only loss was in a rematch against Mater Dai.

During his senior year at Oak Hill, Carmelo has averaged 21.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. He was able to get his ACT score up, and stared attending Syracuse after Oak Hill.

History Of The Air Jordan Brand

In 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company looking for ways to appeal to a new segment of the shoe market, and to reinvent themselves. Nike has turned to rookie Michael Jordan to order to make an endorsement deal, but MJ showed no interest at all. MJ had plans to sign a deal with either Adidas or Converse; he loved the brands, and in North Carolina, these were the shoes that wore to play basketball in. Unfortunately, both of the brands rejected him.

Nike was offering to create a brand new line of shoes called Air Jordan, and MJ’s old agent, David Falk, saw this as a wonderful opportunity. MJ flew to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, after being convinced by his parents , and his agent. During his visit, Nike has shown him a special video presentation of his college career highlights, plus his high-flying Olympics moves with Pointer Sister’s “Jump” playing in the background. Peter Moore, Nike’s Old Head Designer, also shown MJ sketches of the Air Jordan 1, and apparel to go with it. It was featured in Black and Red, and MJ was very interested with these designs. He has stated: “I can’t wear these shoes, those are devil colors”.

MJ has decided to finally make a deal with Nike, and has signed a 5-year deal that was worth $2.5 million. MJ has fueled the success of Nike, and the Air Jordan Brand is still popular today.

The Air Jordan 13 History

The Air Jordan 13 was originally released way back in 1997. Tinker Hatfield has came up with yet another idea for a good design on the next Air Jordan. If you were a big Michael Jordan fan during the 90’s and watched how he played on the court, you would have notice the resemblance between him and a panther. He would watch his players and make a sudden move, and MJ would have the ball before you even knew what happened!!!

Tinker has met up with MJ and told him that he looked like a panther, or black cat. He also stated: “he would read his player, and strike like a panther”. Did you know that back in the day that all of MJ’s friends called him “black cat” which was his nickname??? The unique sole featured on the 13 is a huge resemblance to a panther’s paw. The 13 also features the classic circle hologram located by the heel of the sneaker, which is said to resemble the eye of a panther. You can notice the 23 and Jumpman logo on the hologram if you look very closely. Unfortunately, the hologram would fogged up overtime.

Back in 1997-1998, the Air Jordan 13 was originally retailed at $150.00, and the low versions were $130.00.

Features Of The Shoe

This sneaker pays homage to Oak Hill, the high school that Carmelo Anthony has attended. It consist of a black, university gold and red colorway. It also comes with details of leather, suede, and nylon. Finally, Melo’s logos can be found within the insoles: “Class Of 2002” on the right, and the Melo Logo on the left.

  3. I didn’t realize so much thought went into some of these shoes. Very cool! I just thought they worked with a design that the player liked or something. It’s great to read a little background about why they made the shoe and about the brand as well. Pardon my ignorance, but is the Jordan brand still a branch of Nike, or is it it’s own stand alone brand?

    • Hello TJ, thanks for the comment. The Jordan Brand is a separate company, and has surpassed Nike Basketball in terms of the basketball shoe market share.

    • Hello Will, thanks for the comment. Sneakers go way back since the late 18th century. During that time, there were shoes called Plimsolls (rubber soled shoes) that people have worn, but was very crude. In 1892, the Keds sneakers were invented by the US Rubber Company. They are canvas top sneakes with more comfortable rubber. They started to become mass produced by 1917, and got the nickname sneakers since they were quiet, and you can actually sneak up on somebody. Also during that year, Converse All-Stars shoes were produced by Marquis Converse, and they were the first sneakers to be made for basketball, and have become the best selling basketball shoes of all time. By 1923, the sneakers were endorsed by Chuck Taylor, and now they are known as Chuck Taylor All-Stars. By 1924, sneakers started to go global. Adi Dassler has created a sneaker called Adidas, which is named after himself. Adidas has become most popular athletic shoe in the world. Adi also has a brother name Rudi, who has created a sneaker called Puma. These sport sneakers were mostly used to play sports in during the first half of the 20th century. During the 1950’s kids these sneakers started to become a trend, and kids would only wear them for fashion. In 1984, Michael Jordan signed a contract with Nike to wear sneakers known as Air Jordan. The Jordan sneakers are a best seller, and are the most famous sneaker ever made. Sneakers would also begin to be produced for other sports such as walking, skateboarding, and cross training.
